Pudukottai tops in cataract surgeries

13,800 boys and girls in 83 schools screened at special camps

PUDUKOTTAI: The district has topped the list among all the districts in the State in performing maximum cataract surgeries in the last three years, Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar said.

During the current year, 3,420 men and women have undergone cataract surgery, she said while speaking at the Eye Donation Fortnight here on Wednesday.

Villagers suffering from cataract were being referred to the Government Headquarters Hospital and intra-ocular lens was fixed in over 1,300 villagers.

Primary health centres have been conducting special eye screening camps in all schools. So far, over 13,800 boys and girls in 83 schools have been screened. A total of 144 students were identified with vision problems and they were provided treatment. Free spectacles were also being distributed.

Ms. Thakkar said that about 150 people had come forward to donate their eyes and submitted applications. Twenty seven persons had donated their eyes. More people should come forward to donate their eyes, she added. The Collector distributed eye donation application forms, eye donation concept awareness stickers and free spectacles to poor students.
