Some houses have suffered minimal damage A retaining wall will be built: officials NAGAPATTINAM: Seawater entered the housing colony for tsunami victims at Pazhaiyar, near Sirkazhi, on Tuesday night, causing a mild scare. The residents said the seawater entered the colony beyond the first row of the houses closest to the sea. These houses, constructed by the government after NGOs backed out, suffered minimal damage. However, the memories of the tsunami created a mild panic, and the villagers alerted the panchayat president. He contacted the engineer in-charge and ordered the shoring up of the bunds near the village, using sand. District Revenue Officer A. Annadurai and K. Arunmani, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, visited the spot and assured the residents that immediate steps would be taken. A retaining wall would be built along the portion facing the sea, officials said. They said that land-filling would be taken up to elevate the low-level areas. The officials also promised to look into other complaints such as leaking houses and insufficient water supply. They said all faulty work would be corrected at the earliest.
