Sharp rise in price of egg in 25 years

Special Correspondent

NAMAKKAL: The spiralling cost of vegetables and the early onset of winter have prompted a sharp hike in the price of table egg at Rs. 2.25 per unit at the farm gate for the first time in 25 years since the organised poultry industry came into existence here. Today’s price is 15 paise, which is more than that of the actual production cost of a single unit, i.e., Rs 2.10. Muscat, one of major consumers in the Middle East, has decided to resume its import of eggs from Thursday. Muscat and other Middle East countries such as Dubai, Qatar, Oman and Abu Dhabi have banned the egg import from India since the Bird Flu outbreak in the state of West Bengal some three years back. Namakkal Zone produces an average 2.5 crore egg units per day of which 70 lakh per day go to Kerala. Another two crore eggs per week are consumed in noon meal scheme.
