SALEM: A group of five school students from Sri Sarada Vidhyalaya Girls Higher Secondary School carried out a study on the drinking water supplied by the Salem Corporation and found large presence of harmful bacteria in it. The group comprising K. Revathi, R. Sukanya, K.K.S. Poornima Sundar, Deepika and S.Kirthika, who were studying Plus One in the school, submitted the report to Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini and urged the civic body to ensure the supply of safe drinking water to the people in the city. Students also suggested the people to boil the water or use a water purifier. While interacting with the students, the Mayor said the Corporation would consider installing reverse osmosis systems for water purification in the schools and colleges in partnership with the private. Students also distributed handbills carrying information on the adverse impacts of drinking contaminated water to people in Chinnaputhur, Periya Puthur, Fairlands, Ammapet, Kannankurichi, Ponnammapet, Gorimedu, Railway Junction, Kuranguchavadi and Hasthampatti areas. The students carried out the study to participate in the national-level Science Congress.
