AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch police have filed charge sheet against 80 accused in the case of July 26 Ahmedabad serial blasts. While filling the customary charge sheet before Ahmedabad Metropolitan Magistrate G. M. Patel the police informed the court that 53 of the accused named in the charge sheet were still absconding while 27 had been arrested. Even as the investigation into the serial blasts is still on, the charge-sheet has been filed to meet the legal requirement of filing the papers within 90 days of the first arrests of the accused. About 10 of the accused were arrested by the Gujarat police on August 16 and the mandatory 90-day period would be over in the next three days. The first set of charge sheet running into about 2,000 pages, were filed only for the blasts at the trauma centre of the Ahmedabad civil hospital and the L.G. municipal hospitals. The charge sheet for the other 16 serial blasts would be filed later. The police said as the investigation threw new lights into the blast cases, additional charge-sheets would be filed in the court. They said that so far they had examined about 510 witnesses in connection with the blasts. The Surat Metropolitan Court on Wednesday remanded Abu Bashar Kasmi, Tanvir Pathan and Sajid Mansuri to police custody till November 18 in connection with the planting of bombs in the diamond city. Kasmi, considered the mastermind behind the Ahmedabad blasts, was arrested from his home district of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, along with Sajid, and Tanvir. They were taken to Surat on Tuesday for further investigation.
