Idukki, Ernakulam advance

ALAPPUZHA: There was a flood of talented players from Idukki a few years ago. The hard work put in by coach G. Nanu paid off richly as the KSEB’s Hydel Recreation Club threw up little stars who ruled the State circuit.

But after Nanu’s retirement some five years ago, things appeared to slow down. The flow is no longer steady from Idukki and ample proof came from the hilly district’s women’s league encounter against Ernakulam in the Kerala State table tennis championship at the Alappuzha YMCA on Wednesday evening.

Idukki’s Sreerenjini lost her opener against Lia Chacko and a little later, Ernakulam’s promising G. Gayatri gained a game against top-seeded Adheena K. Lathif. Idukki was forced to work hard for its 3-1 victory and take the top position in Group ‘D’, with Ernakulam taking the second spot.

Both the teams qualified for the quarterfinals.

The other top teams progressed through their league encounters without raising much sweat.
