Arcelor submits EoI for abandoned mines

Indrani Dutta

A total of 12 companies registered their interest.

KOLKATA: ArcelorMittal has finally submitted its expression of interest (EoI) for reviving abandoned mines of Coal India Ltd (CIL) for which the Navratna PSU had invited global EoIs for ‘salvaging, rehabilitating and operating of abandoned, derelict mines’ in September this year.

The EoI was submitted on Wednesday just at it was being felt that the global financial tangle had caught in its web a large number of companies which would have been interested otherwise, including LN Mittal’s company.

The time has already been extended from the earlier deadline of October 13.

Big names

Top CIL sources told The Hindu that Mittal India put in its EoI on Wednesday, taking the total number of companies registering their interest in this project to 12.

These include big names in the global mining industry like RioTinto India, and Titan Mining, Australia, besides domestic companies, including Reliance Natural Resources and a joint venture of Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India S&T Mining India.

Jindal Steel, Sterlite, GVK Power and Infrastructure, Essar Steel with its partners Massey Energy of the U.S., Sunflag Iron and Steel Company, Monnet Ispat and Ranjan Mining Enterprises are the other companies which have submitted EoIs, sources said.

After analysing the proposals, CIL will finalise the tender documents and then form individual joint ventures on a competitive basis for each of the 18 mines

Of the 18 mines identified, six mines are in the Eastern Coalfields area, seven under Bharat Coking Coal and four under Central Coking Coal.

Some of these may also have coking coal reserves.
