A cement concrete carriageway being laid in Kancheepuram on Monday. KANCHEEPURAM: The total length of cement roads in Kancheepuram town is all set increase by 17.08 km with the completion of 88 works taken by the Municipality at the cost of Rs.4.93 crore. Enquiries reveal that as on January 31, 2008, civic body maintained 44.99 km of blacktopped roads, 31.93 km cement roads and around 1.50 km kutcha roads in the town. However, major thoroughfares such as Gandhi Road, Kamarajar Salai, Railway Road and the four Rajaveedhis, totalling around 15.58 km, were maintained by the State Highways Department. The elected Council, at a meeting held in February this year, approved a resolution seeking its consent to take up 156 different works, including cement road works, worth around Rs.5.23 crore. Subsequently tenders were called and work orders issued to take up 88 works of laying cement concrete roads for a total length of 17.08 kms at the total cost of 4.93 crore. While the blacktopped carriageways in a part of M.M.Avenue and a portion of Ennaikara Street have already been completed, the work of replacing blacktopped roads with cement concrete carriageway had been taken up at Karukkinil Amarthanval Koil Street and Thayarkulam Road. Height of manholes raisedThe height of manholes have been raised and provisions made to ensure that underground sewer network connections were provided to new buildings that come up on these roads or repaired in future without damaging the cement concrete carriageway. It had also been decided to convert one half of the carriageway of Thayarkulam Road into cement road as of now, since the work of linking of the proposed sewer pumping station with the main sewer line under the extension of underground sewer network project was yet to be completed, sources said.
