‘Diabetes is a major healthcare problem’

Free screening camp from Friday

According to a study, 40 million people have been affected in the country

Manipal: The Kasturba Hospital will be organising a free diabetic screening camp here from November 14 to 21 as part of World Diabetes Day.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital T.S. Raghu Raman said that R.S. Kini, a senior citizen, would inaugurate a diabetes awareness programme on November 14, the World Diabetes Day.

Pro Chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Ballal would preside over the function. A patient-awareness lecture, followed by an open-house discussion with specialists in the field of diabetes, would be held on the same day, Mr. Raman said..

Diabetes had become a major healthcare problem in India. There were about 40 million people suffering from diabetes in the country in 2007, according to a study, and this number was estimated to increase to 70 million by 2025. It had been found that nearly 50 per cent of people with diabetes remained undetected.

As a result, such people developed various other complications. An early diagnosis of diabetes was important, Dr. Raman said.

Head of the department of General Medicine, Kasturba Hospital, R Balasubramanian, senior consultant in the department, N.R. Rau and organising secretary B. Jayaprakash were present.

The free diabetic screening camp, including free blood glucose testing and consultation, will be open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on November 14 and between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. from November 15 to 21. For details call 2571201 (10 lines).
