Palit triumphs, gains IM title

Chennai: Somak Palit of Kolkata won the West Bengal Chess Association International FIDE rating tournament which concluded at Kolkata on Tuesday.

Palit also achieved the International Master title as he crossed the 2400 rating mark. Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua and International Master Neeraj Kumar Mishra distributed the prizes.

In the 11-round Swiss format tournament that ran from November 4-11, Somak Palit and R.R. Laxman scored nine points but the Bengali youngster had the higher progressive score and was declared champion on tie-break.

Top seed IM Laxman of ICF, Chennai finished second.
