GIVING IT THE TREATMENT: S. Vidyut was in full flow and his superb knock helped Tamil Nadu post a mammoth 531 in the first essay.

Bangalore: As the shadows lengthened so did the worry-lines in the Karnataka dressing room as the host hopes to stay afloat against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Super League in progress at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here.

At stumps on Tuesday, the second day, Karnataka was 82 for one in reply to Tamil Nadu’s imposing 531. Opener K.B. Pawan and Ganesh Satish were at the crease after Bharath Chipli (26) fell to left-arm spinner C. Suresh and with skipper Robin Uthappa hospitalised due to a viral bout, it would be a tough chase for first innings honours.

Marching ahead

Earlier, resuming at 325 for four, Tamil Nadu marched ahead through S. Vidyut (193, 355b, 24x4, 4x6) and Suresh Kumar’s (90, 202b, 12x4, 3x6) 150-run fifth-wicket partnership.

A screeching straight drive off Sunil Joshi was just a hint of Vidyut’s dominance while Suresh eased past his fifty with two huge blows off Vinu Narayanan and Joshi.

Vidyut was all set for a double hundred when he got stranded against off-spinner C. Raghu. Immediately Joshi prised out R. Ashwin and Ganapathy Chandrashekar.

Past lunch, Suresh Kumar and C. Suresh guided the score to 500 before Joshi struck. Suresh Kumar shuffled and Joshi spun it into the pads though the batsmen hinted he had got a snick.
