Railways posts two wins

CHENNAI: Reigning champion Railways warmed up with two convincing wins, over Uttar Pradesh and Kerala in pool ‘A’ on Tuesday in the league phase of the National women’s handball championship at the Nehru indoor stadium here. Sandhya and Anamika were the pick of the Railway players.

Last year’s runner-up Manipur, helped by Rebeka Devi and Shajubala Devi made amends for Monday’s poor start with a near flawless effort against Madhya Pradesh in pool ‘B’. Host Tamil Nadu however went down fighting to Chhattisgarh.

The results: Pool A: Railways 27 (Sandhya 5) bt UP 5; Punjab 20 (Gurmeet Kaur 8) bt Jharkhand 8. Pool B: Delhi 28 (Manisa 7) bt Karnataka 3; Manipur 34 (Rebeka Devi 5, Shajubala Devi 5) bt MP 2; Karnataka 11 bt MP 4; Pool C: Maharashtra 29 (Sunitha 6) bt Rajasthan 8; All India Univ 25 (Sonia 6) bt HP 9; Pool D: Chhattisgarh bt Tamil Nadu 13-11. — Special Correspondent
