Water shortage discussed at KDP meeting in Davangere

DAVANGERE: The absence of drinking water facility in most government schools in the district was discussed at the Karnataka Development Programme review meeting (KDP) here on Tuesday. President of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat Y. Ramappa directed the Executive Engineer of the Zilla Panchayat Engineering Division to dig borewells in all government schools which had drinking water problems.

Chairing the meeting, Mr. Ramappa said he had visited many schools in villages including Nalkudre and surrounding villages in Chennagiri and found that there was no drinking water facility in many of them. Teachers of the schools had been carrying out midday meal programmes with much difficulty in the absence of drinking water, he said.

He directed the Deputy Director of Public instruction and the Executive Engineer to conduct a survey of schools where there was no drinking water and prepare an action plan to dig borewells soon.

Non-implementation of the scheme wherein one-third of the benefits were to be given to women in all 19 departments was another important subject discussed at the meeting. Mr. Ramappa and chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat Guthi Jamboonath decided to complain to the Women’s Commission about 12 departments which have not implemented the government order.

The Government had issued a circular to all departments some years ago to give 1/3 of the benefits to women to empower them. However, of the 19 departments, 12 had not submitted reports to the zilla panchayat or the Women and Child Welfare Department in this regard. Mr. Ramappa said that despite repeated instructions from the panchayat, the 12 departments had failed to submit their reports.

He said the panchayat would register complaints with the State Women’s Commission if action was not taken.

Done well

The Sericulture Department is among seven departments that implemented the order and has done well to help women.
