‘MAD’ to start its activities in city

Staff reporter

HYDERABAD: Many want to do something for the society, but only a handful makes that difference. One such organisation is ‘Make A Difference’ (MAD) which has lived up to its name. Started in Kochi three years back by three college students, the organisation imparts quality education to underprivileged children. Currently functioning in Kochi, Chennai and Pune with over 300 volunteers, reaching out to 1,000 school children, MAD will soon start activity in Hyderabad. Incidentally, MAD has also been recently short-listed for the coveted Ashoka Youth Social Entrepreneur award. MAD is the only Indian presence in the top 15 NGOs selected from 520 entries from 61 countries across the world. The winner for the same is selected through online voting.

Come November 11 and MAD Hyderabad will go on a recruitment drive at two degree colleges - Bhavan’s Vivekananda Degree College and St. Mary’s Degree College. “We are looking at someone with good English communication skills and lot of zeal. He/she should be able to handle children in the age group of 10 to 15 years effectively,” says Gloria Benny, member, MAD Hyderabad.

According to her, children from three orphanages in the city - Tara (Secunderabad), Kasturba Gandhi Home for Destitute (Mehdipatnam) and Don Bosco Home for Boys (Boiguda) will benefit from this voluntary programme. The 40 volunteers to be recruited will be handling 80 children. Volunteers are expected to spend just two hours a week with the children.

“In the long term, we will also be looking at placing children who have passed tenth standard in jobs also and are going to tie up with retail chains and IT companies soon,” added Sujith Varkey, founder-member, MAD.
