Land acquisition, utility lines shifting affecting projects

Staff Reporter

Flyover at Yeshwanthpur Circle to be ready by February-end

44 different projects being taken up under JNNURM in Bangalore

Bangalore: Delay in acquisition of land and shifting of utility lines are among the reasons which affected completion of infrastructure projects taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURUM) in Bangalore, according to Urban Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S. Suresh Kumar.

Addressing presspersons after inspecting the progress of construction work related to six different projects here on Monday, Mr. Kumar admitted that the projects under JNNURM were not being implemented with the speed with which it should have been done.

He, however, made it clear that absence of an elected body in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had no relation to delay in completion of JNNURM projects. Karnataka was at the fourth place in implementation of projects under JNNURM, Mr. Kumar added.

The flyover under construction at the Yeshwanthpur Circle was delayed due to time taken to shift utility lines and traffic diversion. The flyover being built at a cost of Rs. 21 crore would be ready for public use by the end of February 2009, the Minister said.

Similarly, elevated road over storm water drain and related work near Gali Anjaneyaswamy temple on Mysore Road taken up at a cost of Rs 31.93 crore would be completed by March 2009. Asking the officials of all civic agencies connected with the projects not to treat the projects under JNNURM as routine civil works, the Minister said officials need to give due importance and regular monitoring of the progress of work.

Mr. Kumar said as 44 different projects under JNNURM with an approved cost of Rs. 2,968 crore were in various stages of implementation in Bangalore city and so far Rs. 416 crore had been spent.
