NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Monday slapped a notice on the BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate for Delhi, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct for elections by exceeding the limit on the number of vehicles to accompany a candidate at the time of filing of nominations. In the notice, the Commission pointed out that as per the standing instructions addressed to the Chief Electoral Officers of all States and Union Territory “the maximum number of vehicles that will be allowed to come within the periphery of 100 metres of Returning Officer’s/Assistant Returning Officer’s office shall be three and maximum number of persons that will be allowed to enter the office of Returning Officer/Assistant Returning Officer at the time of filing nomination shall be the candidate plus four other individuals which may include any proposer/proposers proposing the nomination of the candidate i.e. there can be only five people ( including the candidate) who can remain present inside the Returning Officer’s/Assistant Returning Officer’s room at the time of filing nomination.” The Commission has asked him to explain by 5 p.m. on Tuesday why action should not be taken for the alleged violation.
