(Right) A student answering a question posed to him during The Hindu Young World Quiz in Hyderabad on Monday. Hyderabad: It was the battle of brains on Monday at The Hindu Young World Quiz 2008 where students from 166 schools across the State and also parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka geared up to answer questions. A total of 522 teams, each comprising two students set their minds to work at Hari Hara Kala Bhavan here at a written preliminary round. With answers being discussed amongst each team and finally being jotted down on the answer sheet, the venue assumed the sombre air of a huge examination hall. The questions were repeated again after the preliminary round ended and this time, the microphone was passed around the auditorium and students were given a chance to win prizes, such as movie tickets and books. A number of hands shot up in the air when interesting questions like ‘Which Persian dish literally meaning ‘roasted’ or ‘fried’ is very popular in Hyderabad’ were asked. ‘Biryani’, said a student confidently to which the audience broke into a loud applause. Interesting questionsQuestions about Harry Potter, social networking sites and animation movies had a lot of students standing up, wanting to answer-- their energy and enthusiasm was electrifying. “The quiz was very exciting and we got to know a lot of things during the written rounds. Also, we had a chance to know if we had written the correct answers when they were being read out,” said Shaina, a student from Sloka School. Other students who won prizes for saying out correct answers were thrilled. “I’m very happy to have participated in the quiz and the energy here is amazing. I hope such quizzes are conducted regularly,” said Bharat, a student of Vijaya High School. Teachers who accompanied their students were also excited. “It’s a good platform for students to get to know their strengths and weaknesses. Also, they get to compete and interact with students from other schools,” said Subbalakshmi Dutt, a teacher from Kennedy High the Global Schools. Six teams from All Saints High School, Little Flower High School, Nasr Girls School, Sister Stanislas and two teams from St. Joseph’s English School (Kurnool) were short-listed for the regional final round wherein 30 questions were fired at them by quiz master V.V. Ramanan. ToppersAfter gruelling rounds of questioning, A. Krishna Akhil and P. Rohan Naidu from All Saints High School bagged the first prize which was given to them by Badminton Champion and Chief Guest, Saina Nehwal. Standing second were Syed Murtuza Hashmi and Vadlamani Srikrishna from Little Flower High School.“We knew that we could stand first because we had participated last year too. The competition was very good and we were prepared to face it,” said Rohan. The winning team is all set to participate in the National Finals that will be held at Visakhapatnam on November 13.
