Soumya assures herself of title

TADEPALLIGUDEM: Women’s International Master Soumya Swaminathan of Maharashtra has assured herself of the National junior girls’ chess title with one round to spare in the 38th National junior boys’ and 23rd National junior girls’ championship at the Sasi Institute of Technology and Engineering here on Monday.

In the penultimate, 10th round, she defeated Mitali Madhukar, also of Maharashtra, in 65 moves to garner nine points to clinch the title for the third time.

Orissa’s Padmini Rout with eights points in her kitty is all set to finish second, even if she loses her final game on Tuesday, with better progressive scoring.

Andhra Pradesh’s M.R. Laltih Babu has brightened his chances of winning the title by outplaying Fide Master S. Nitin of Tamil Nadu to emerge as the sole leader with eight points.

P. Karthikeyan, the overnight joint leader, who settled for a draw against N. Shyam Sundar, has 7.5 points.

Lalith, playing blacks in Reti, took advantage of Nitin’s blunder (Nh2) in the 14th move and in the 46th move the game entered the winning endgame.

In the knight three pawns vs. bishop three pawns endgame, Lalith had strong connected passed pawns to oust his rival after a marathon four-hour tussle.

P. Karthikeyan, playing white in Grunfield, settled for a swift draw in 15 moves against his Statemate Shyam Sundar.
