Classical status

This is regarding the reported complaint by eminent Keralites on the denial of classical language status to Malayalam (November 10). There is certainly merit in questioning the Centre’s role in playing with the people’s feelings. Why not demand the classical language status for English and “Indish” too as a pre-election gift?

Deeming languages as classical has become a joke. It is unfortunate that such a status is being accorded for political reasons. Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu and Kannada would not have become lesser languages had they not been accorded the status by the government. Shun this mania.

T.S. Pattabhi Raman,

Coimbatore
