Storm-water drain work to be completed in two days

Traffic remains affected on Brigade Road
‘We will ensure free flow of storm water’

BANGALORE: Traffic on Brigade Road and surrounding areas continued to be affected on Sunday even as the repair work of a collapsed culvert being taken up by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) at the Brigade Road-Residency Road junction will take another two days to be completed.

The normally fast moving Sunday evening traffic was slow on Brigade Road, Richmond Road, Residency Road, Kasturba Road, Magrath Road, St. Mark’s Road and M.G. Road even as the mound of soil and excavated material that was seen on Saturday had been removed.

A long line of vehicles continued to pile up along these busy thoroughfares and interconnecting roads, despite the traffic police making adequate arrangements to divert the traffic.

Meanwhile, the concrete bed was laid at the bottom of the excavated area, and Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) pre-cast elements, that are generally referred to as “magic boxes”, will be used to reconstruct the storm-water drain.

The pre-cast elements measure 3m x 3m in dimension and are wedged together by steel rods.

Chief Engineer of the BBMP (Storm-water Drains) Chittarayappa told The Hindu that the “magic boxes” would be filled with cement slurry at the bottom so as to provide for a free flow of storm water.

‘Slurry packing’

“The pre-cast elements can hold a weight of more than 70 tonnes. Twenty-two of these pre-cast elements, that are prepared at the casting yard at Nayandahalli, will be packed with cement slurry so as to prevent leakage of storm water.

“The entire project will be completed in two days following which the traffic will ease out considerably,” he said.

He said: “The roads will be raised by one metre and [they] will slope downwards towards the Brigade Road-Residency Road junction.”
