Aaron D’Souza sets new meet record

GOOD SHOW: Richa Mishra, who won the 200m backstroke, has had a great outing so far in the senior National aquatic championships.

HYDERABAD: Richa Mishra added two more gold medals on the penultimate day to take her tally to five in the LIC 62nd senior National aquatic championships at the G.M.C. Balayogi sports complex swimming pool here on Sunday.

She is all set to emerge as the best woman swimmer of the championship and speaking to the media after the day’s events were through, she said she was delighted with her performance.

“This will be the sixth time that I will be winning the best swimmer award at a National championship. And now my next aim will be to win a medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games which are to be held in Delhi,” said Richa.

Teenager Aaron D’Souza created a new meet record in 400m freestyle showing tremendous stamina and determination.

He was behind the leaders almost till the last lap but then fought strongly to overtake his rivals.

In the process he broke the old of 4:4.49 set by Rehan Poncha a year ago with a time of 4:4.02s.

The results (all finals): Men: 400m freestyle: 1. Aaron D’Souza (Kar) 4:4.02s (NMR), 2. Mandar Divase (Police) 4:06.96s, 3. A.P. Gagan (Kar) 4:13.60s. (OMR: Rehan Poncha, 4:4.49s, 2007). 200m backstroke: 1. Rehan Poncha (Kar) 2:8.66s, 2. M.B. Balakrishnan (TN) 2:13.13s, 3. N.A. Sandeep (Kar) 2:13.76s. 50m butterfly: 1. J.P. Arjun (Kar) 26.12s, 2. K. Rajeev (RSPB) 26.56s, 3 Sumanta Nath (RSPB) 26.71s.

Water polo (semifinals): RSPB 12 (Akshay Kurhekar 5, V.S. Adharsh 2, Sumit Gavhane, Pradip Choudhury, Shankar Naskar, Arjun Kawle and Robin Bordey) bt Police 5 (P.V. Chikhliker 3, N. Gopa Kumar and Kehar Singh).

SSCB 6 (S. Das 2, L.J. Meitei 2, P.D. Dominic, S. Chandran) bt Maharashtra 4 (Devendra Joshi, Sribas Sardar, Juned Khan, Tamal Chaudhary).

Women: 1,500m freestyle: 1. Richa Mishra (Pol) 18:12.20s, 2. Navya G. Shenoy (Kar) 18:56.36s, 3. Sushaka Pratap (Kar) 19:20.66s. 200m backstroke: 1. Richa Mishra (Pol) 2:27.88s, 2. Fariha Zaman (Assam) 2:30.20s, 3. Arti Ghorpade (Mah) 2:34.01s. 50m butterfly: 1. C. Subha (Kar) 29.46s, 2. Arhatha Magavi (Kar) 29.54s, 3. Fariha Zaman (Assam) 30.08s.

Diving (1mt spring board): 1. Hrutika Shriram (RSPB) 202.95 points (NMR), 2. Poonam Shah (Mah) 158.30 pts, 3. Karishma Mohite (Kar) 152.40 pts. (OMR: Hrutika Shriram 189.55 pts, 2006).

Water polo (semifinals): Police 11 (Smita Gavhane 4, Shubhangi Bhoite 3, Purnima Pal 2, Priti Gupta, L. Bindiya Devi) bt Maharashtra 3 (Payal Ajmire 2, Dipti Motghare).
