BIDAR: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly M. Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday said that Basavakalyan taluk should be developed into an international tourist centre to showcase the principles of Basaveshwara, the 12th Century social reformer. Speaking at the valedictory function of three-day Sharana Kammata at Basavakalyan taluk of the district, Mr. Kharge said the principles of Basaveshwara should be spread all over the world. Abiding by the principles would bring down conflict in society. Organising Basava Utsav should motivate members of society to bring about social change, he said. Mr. Kharge said Vachana Sahitya has made the Kannada language rich and expressed satisfaction over the classical language status accorded to Kannada. The former Chief Minister Dharam Singh said Anubhava Mantapa (religious parliament) constituted by Basaveshwara in Basavakalayn should act as an “open university” to teach Sharana philosophy. He said the former Chief Minister the late J.H. Patel made initial efforts to develop both Kudalasangama and Basavakalyan, associated with Basaveshwara, when he was Chief Minister. “I had released funds for the development of Basavakalyan Development Board to take up restoration works on monuments,” the former Chief Minister said.
