The Supreme Court has asked the government to issue guidelines with respect to student excursions to educational institutions, which need to ensure the safety of the students and could be held liable in case of an accident. What are the imperatives to ensure that students remain safe while also enjoying a fruitful trip? Our readers respond: Self-discipline Children love the carefree ambience of excursions. After all, it is all play and no work for them. But such trips are fraught with dangers, mostly brought forth by lack of proper planning. Students must be escorted by adequate number of teachers, say in the ratio of one teacher for six students. Those who organise the trip must have a clear idea of the destinations. A well planned itinerary is a must. The school or college should arrange for a good guide if the place is far off. Authorities too have a part to play. Safety squads must be constituted near lakes or rivers frequented by tourists. And most importantly, discipline among students matters. If they wish to be safe, they too must be disciplined enough to stay out of danger. Reshma J. Kanjikode
