CBI probe into trader’s murder ruled out

CUTTACK: The High Court has refused to order for CBI enquiry into the kidnap and murder of Keonjhar Town businessman Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra.

The mines owner was allegedly kidnapped for a ransom from Bhubaneswar in May 2007 and within a week his vehicle and the body of his driver were retrieved near Ranchi.

Another mutilated body was also retrieved from the nearby area which was disfigured beyond recognition.

“In view of the DNA test report confirmed that the mutilated body belongs to Mohapatra, there was no need for ordering CBI enquiry”, said the bench of Chief Justice B. S. Chauhan and Justice B. N. Mohapatra in its judgment that was reserved last week.

Mohapatra’s wife had moved the HC through a habeas corpus writ seeking CBI enquiry into the missing of her husband.

She had also urged the HC to direct CBI for producing her husband as the local police probing into the matter have failed to make any headway in the case.

Seeing the nature of the case, the HC had ordered for a DNA test of the body retrieved from Ranchi to find whether Mohapatra was killed or not.

The test report had confirmed that the unidentified body belonged to Mohapatra.
