Engineering colleges under AU-Coimbatore outperform others

ERODE: Engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University-Coimbatore have outperformed colleges under other Anna Universities in the April-May 2008 examinations conducted by Anna University-Chennai.

The results of the examinations, which were declared recently, show that Anna University-Coimbatore colleges have highest percentage of institutions in the top 50 colleges in the State.

With 32.73 per cent, colleges under Coimbatore region stand first, followed by those in Chennai with 18.52 per cent, Tirunelveli region colleges with 17.65 per cent and Tiruchi colleges with 13.33 per cent. In terms of number of colleges in the top 50, however, Chennai tops with 20, followed by Coimbatore 18, and Tiruchi and Tirunelveli six each. Anna University-Chennai has 108 colleges, Coimbatore 55, Tiruchi 45 and Tirunelveli 34. And, the results the Chennai university has declared is based on the second, third and fourth year results of students who gave their final exam in April-May this year.

In the bottom 50 colleges, the Coimbatore region has again done well in that it has the least percentage.

With 12.73 per cent, Coimbatore is at the bottom of the table, preceded by Tiruchi with 22.22 per cent, Chennai 23.15 per cent and Tirunelveli with 23.53 per cent.

This time in terms of number also the Coimbatore region is at the bottom with only seven. Tirunelveli region has eight colleges, Tiruchi 10 and Chennai 25.

Pass percentage apart, colleges under Anna University-Coimbatore have secured the maximum number of ranks. Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, stands first in the State with 75 university ranks, of which six are gold.

The second college from the region to have found a place in the top 10 is Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, with 34 ranks, including a gold.

The other colleges in the top 10 include K.S. Rangasamy College of Technology, Tiruchengode and Sona College of Technology, Salem.

Anna University-Coimbatore Vice-Chancellor R. Radhakrishnan says since the constitution of the university he has been trying hard to better the standard.

‘Higher standards’

“From introduction of e-administration of the university and colleges to online examination and evaluation to altering the evaluation pattern, giving equal weightage to internal and external examinations, the University has always set higher standards,” Dr. Radhakrishnan said.

Dr. Radhakrishnan also introduced measures like introducing engineering graphics as a subject and outsourcing English teaching to bring in Cambridge University syllabus.
