CHENNAI: The 37th women’s National handball championship will be conducted by the Tamil Nadu unit at the Nehru Indoor complex here from November 10 to 15. This is the first time that the city is playing host to this championship. In all 24 units had entered the fray. “We were expecting a few more teams but a few from eastern and northern India could not make it because of the disturbed situation prevailing there,” according to S.M. Bali, Secretary-General, Handball Federation of India, at a press meet on Saturday. Mr. Bali complimented the local organisers for the preparatory work done. “Tamil Nadu has its own office inside the stadium now and own courts outside the indoor complex thanks to the SDAT. Besides a national camp is also on, there is much activity here,” he said. He said that the players attending the camp for the Asian championship later this month in Bangkok will also represent their respective State units in the National. Mr. Bali said the National would be held on a league-cum-knock out format with emphasis on more outings for the weaker teams. — Special Correspondent
