Mixed day for Prabhakaran

BOLPUR (WEST BENGAL): E. Prabhakaran of Tamil Nadu sent third seed Raj Mondal of North Bengal packing in the first round of the men’s singles of the SAIL National-ranking table tennis (East Zone) here at the Kabiguru Sports Complex on Friday.

The first day’s action in the men’s and women’s sections saw a few upsets but a majority of the seeded players had it easy.

Prabhakaran, a ward of the SDAT-AKG Academy in Chennai, failed to hold on to his form in the second round and went down rather cheaply (1-4) against Statemate G. Sathiyan.

Top-seeded Sourav Chakraborty of Railways, second seed Subhajit Saha, fourth seed A. Amal Raj (both Petroleum) and fifth seed S. Sheshadri of Tamil Nadu confirmed their pre- quarterfinal berth with easy wins in the second round.

In the women’s section, sixth-seeded Susmita Roy was shown the door by Prajakta Tipale of Railways.

Mamta Prabhu (Indian Bank) and Mansi Bhagat (Railways) were the other two higher ranked players who lost against relatively unknown opponents. Soumi Mondal, the Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medallist, lost in the first round of the women’s section.
