Sadagopan, Director, IIIT, Bangalore (second from right), and N. Sugalchand Jain, chairman, Sugal and Damani Group of Companies, in Chennai on Thursday. CHENNAI: Chairman of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council V. Krishnamurthy has called for introducing “certain amount of import curbs” to protect the goods manufactured by small and medium enterprises and to prevent dumping by other countries. Speaking at the Chamber Day celebrations of the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce (HCC), Mr. Krishnamurthy, who was the chief guest, said that bringing in import curbs would mean restricting import, but it would go a long way towards safeguarding the small and medium units. He conferred the Champion of Humanity Award, instituted by the Chamber, on S. Sadagopan, Director, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, and N. Sugalchand Jain, chairman, Sugal and Damani Group of Companies, for their contribution to education and philanthropy. The award comprised a shawl and a citation. Chamber president Umesh M. Pujara said the award was presented annually to a businessman and a professional who contributed to the growth of business and profession, and to social causes selflessly.
