VIJAYAWADA: The Krishna district unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists staged a dharna in front of Sub-Collector’s office demanding that the State Government resolve the problems of farmers who were tilling the ‘lanka bhoomulu’ (land along side the banks of river and the islands within), here on Thursday.

CPI(M) district secretary V. Uma Maheswara Rao said that thousands of acres of lanka bhoomulu from Vedadri in Jaggaiahpeta mandal to Avanigadda mandal in the district were in the hands of the “big landlords” in benami names, while some of the lands were in the name of societies.

The landlords have forcibly taken possession of them and were tilling the assigned lands given to the poor in some villages, he said.

Citing an example, Mr. Rao said, five acres of land in survey number 131/2B was in the hands of landlords in Damuluru village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal.

The landlords forcibly took back the land though the Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) handed it over to the dalits. Similarly, about 90 acres of land (R.S. No. 23/3, 24, 26, and 27) in Ankapalli village in Pamidimukkala mandal was in the hands of people who were into real estate business, he said, adding, identical situation prevails in Yanamalakuduru, Pedapulipaka, Chodavaram, Kasaraneni and Madduru villages in Kankipadu mandal, Devarapalli, Gurvindapalli, Iluru and Vallurpalem in Thotlavallur mandal, Srikakulam, Surpaneni varipalem, Papavinasanam, and Goginenipalem in Ghantasala mandal.

‘Issue pattas to poor’

Mr. Rao said that the government should take up survey of the lands in these villages and mandals as promised earlier. In addition, it should issue pattas to poor people who were dependent and tilling these lands. Similarly, the lanka bhoomulu that were illegally occupied by the landlords should be distributed among the poor, and renew the licences to the societies. More so, the lanka bhoomulu, which are lying unused should be distributed to the poor according to Koneru Ranga Rao Commission recommendations, he added.
