HEALTH INITIATIVE: Mayor M. Subramanian offers de-worming tablets to a student of the Chennai Corporation High School at Velachery on Wednesday. —
Chennai: The Chennai Corporation launched a massive de-worming programme for school students on Monday.
Mayor M. Subramanian distributed Albendazole (400 mg) tablets to the students of Corporation High School in Velachery. Albendazole destroys intestinal worms and their eggs without causing diarrhoea or vomiting, and allows for better intake of iron from food.
The children were asked to chew the tablets before swallowing.
The civic body aims to cover about five lakh school children across the city including 1.3 lakh children in Corporation schools. Students in government-recognised schools, government hostels, rehabilitation centres and homes, anganwadis, noon meal scheme centres and hostels would also receive the tablets.
Corporation Health Officer P. Kuganantham said that worm infestation could lead to anaemia resulting in tiredness and reduced performance.
De-worming would improve children’s health and increase their alertness.
The Corporation would spend Rs. 10 lakh on the de-worming programme.
