CHENNAI: WWF-India, a wing of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is eager to bring more students together to campaign for the cause. According to V. Dakshinamurthy, State director, WWF-India, a step in that direction is the ‘Young Climate Savers’ (YCS) programme that the NGO is implementing in schools, in partnership with Tetra Pak. The initiative is aimed at educating 20,000 schoolchildren across India and through them, reaching out and influence a larger audience. “It focuses on the impact of climate change and the importance of mitigating it,” Mr. Dakshinamurthy told The Hindu. The YCS programme is currently implemented in 20 schools in Chennai, with 40 teachers and 4,000 students participating. A teacher’s guide on climate change and energy was also published. Recently, the WWF-India organised an orientation programme in all the 20 schools and an interschool quiz on climate change. Over 30 students participated in the quiz. Birds DayAmong the other interesting activities lined up is the commemoration of world renowned Indian Ornithologist Salim Ali’s birthday as ‘Birds Day.’ On November 12, the Tamil Nadu State Office of WWF-India would conduct an exhibition of drawings and paintings of birds. Interested students should send their drawings and paintings of birds before November 10 to WWF-India: Tamil Nadu State Office, Subramanya Avenue, Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai 600 041. On the rear of the paper, participants should mention the name of the bird, their name, school, class, contact number, e-mail id, attested by the head of their institution.
