Jolly says he will do an “Obama” on Sheila

Staff Reporter

BJP leader Vijay Jolly

NEW DELHI: Taking on Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Vijay Jolly is hopeful of doing an “Obama”. Mr. Jolly, who is contesting the election from New Delhi, said on Wednesday that he was confident that like Obama, who was considered an underdog, he too will emerge a winner.

Promising to put up a “fierce fight” against Ms. Dikshit, Mr. Jolly said: “I am conscious of the fact that I am contesting against the Chief Minister from the New Delhi constituency. I intend to make the contest interesting, fierce and tough.”

Firing the first salvo at his prime opponent, Mr. Jolly accused Ms. Dikshit of failing to deliver on her poll promises. “She had promised that there will be 24X7 water supply in her constituency, whereas even after 10 years of ruling the city and being the Chairperson of the Delhi Jal Board, she has not been able to provide sufficient, leave alone round-the-clock, water supply,” he said.

“She had claimed that there has been unprecedented development and progress in the Capital. So the same should reflect in her constituency too. My first question today is can she name any one area in her constituency that receives 24X7 water supply as promised by her and Government during the last Assembly polls?” he added.

Posers

Challenging the Chief Minister to answer his posers, the BJP leader said residents in her constituency have to wait “in serpentine queues” for water. “Further, will the Chief Minister even name any four areas in her constituency that receive more than one or at the most two hours of water supply every day?” he asked.

Criticising the Congress Government led by Ms. Dikshit for “subjecting people to mental and physical agony due to the failure of the Delhi Jal Board”, Mr. Jolly said the constituency despite being in a VVIP area does not enjoy a regular supply of water.

“The common man has been left to fend for himself and is at the mercy of the water mafia who openly sell water tankers in New Delhi areas under political patronage of the ruling Congress party,” he alleged.

Referring to his candidacy against a “political heavyweight” Mr. Jolly said: “The objective of my contesting from New Delhi is to send across a message that Delhi needs dreamers, visionaries and young blood to take the forward leap. I intend to take the battle to Ms. Dikshit’s camp in a fair and square manner. The focus of my campaign will be on local issues touching the Aam Aadmi in the New Delhi constituency.”
