Attendance of over four lakh people expected 32 subcommittees formed to oversee preparations Chitradurga: The 75th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan will be held in Chitradurga from January 29 to February 1, 2009. This announcement was made by State president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat Nallur Prasad at a function organised at Rangamandira here on Wednesday. Addressing a large gathering which was attended by leaders of various Kannada organisations, writers, poets, lecturers and elected representatives, Dr. Prasad said it was a proud moment for him to be part of the grand event. He said the responsibilities of the office-bearers of the parishat had increased as lots of work had to be done within a short span of time to ensure the success of the event. He sought the cooperation of the people, mainly heads of religious institutions, elected representatives and Kannada organisations, and said they must join hands to help conduct the sammelan. He said that since the sammelans at Udupi and Shimoga received witnessed an attendance of over four lakh people, the parishat was expecting a similar turnout. Dr. Prasad said he had met Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and various Cabinet Ministers to apprise them of the event. “I have been assured by the all leaders of the required facilities and support for the sammelan,” he said. End to speculationPutting an end to all speculation, he said the parishat was committed to holding the sammelan in Chitradurga and there was no question of changing the venue. “The delay in announcing the date was owing to the election of the president of the parishat. Now, as this process is over and the body has been formed, we do not wish to delay things any further,” he said. He said that as part of the process, an office would be inaugurated on Thursday here to ensure smooth administration. In his address, district parishat president K.M. Veeresh said the parishat had constituted 32 subcommittees for the event, which would work together. He said that soon the parishat would constitute a welcome committee for the sammelan. The parishat’s Shimoga district president, Majunath, advised the organisers to ensure adequate funds for the event. Shivamurthy Murughaswamy of the Murugharajendra Math was present on the occasion.
