Government asked to decide on Vigilance report

Special Correspondent

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday directed the State government to take a final decision on the Vigilance inquiry report into the allegation of misuse of funds by the former office-bearers of the Federation of Indian Floriculturists, including the former PWD Minister, P.J. Joseph, in three months.

Justice Kurian Joseph issued the direction on a petition filed by Attukal Surendran. When the petition came up for hearing, the Advocate-General submitted that the Vigilance had recommended recovery of Rs.21,60,831 from the president, secretary and trustees of the federation. The federation was established in 1994.

Stay on new ticket rates

Justice V. Giri on Wednesday stayed a government order allowing enhanced ticket charges for the Malayalam film ‘Twenty 20’ for three days.

Justice V. Giri passed the interim order on a writ petition filed by C.K. Rajendran of Cherthala. He contended that the government had no authority to pass an order enhancing ticket charges for a particular film.

The government could only exempt certain films from tax. The order had allowed collection of 50 per cent over the normal ticket charges from cine-goers. The petitioner said that he was entitled to view the film, paying the normal charges.

Rationalists’ petition

A Bench comprising Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair and Justice M.C. Hari Rani closed a writ petition filed by the Kerala Yukthivadi Sanghom (KYS) seeking a direction to grant police protection to KYS office-bearers to visit Ponambalamedu on Makaravilakku day.

The Bench directed the KYS to obtain the permission of the Forest Department and approach the police. If the Forest Department declined permission, the petitioner could work out other remedies.
