NEW DELHI: A day after a retired Railways official was stabbed to death and his wife injured during a robbery in Sukhdev Vihar here, the police contacted their counterparts in Haryana on Tuesday suspecting involvement of some nomadic tribes. “It seems they came expecting cash and valuables and attacked the couple when they resisted. Criminals belonging to some tribes are known to adopt a similar modus operandi. It is possible that they fled to Faridabad after committing the crime. We are in touch with the Faridabad police,” said DCP (South-East) Ajay Chaudhry. Not ruling out the possibility of someone known to the family being involved, he said: “The assailants knew exactly where the cash and valuables had been kept. Someone casually associated with the family could also have tipped off the robbers. ” According to sources, the police are questioning a rag-picker who had seen the robbers flee after the crime. Madan Mohan Gulati (75) and his wife Indraprabha were sleeping in their bedroom on the ground floor when some robbers broke into their house scaling the compound wall and made off with some cash and valuables after injuring the couple. Mr. Gulati was later declared brought dead at a hospital. His wife sustained serious stab wounds and head injuries. Her condition continues to be serious. “Their children arrived here on Tuesday afternoon. The last rites of Mr. Gulati will be performed on Wednesday,” said a close relative of the couple.
