Speed up supplies to Tamils: Baalu

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Shipping Minister and DMK parliamentary party leader T.R. Baalu on Tuesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and urged them to expedite the despatch of 800 tonnes of relief materials promised by India to help Tamils in the war-affected northern regions of Sri Lanka.

Mr. Baalu, who met the two leaders here on behalf of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M. Karunanidhi, wanted food, clothes, medicines and other items routed through the Indian High Commission and supplied by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations and other international voluntary agencies.

Sources said they also discussed the situation in the island nation, the plight of the affected people and political developments in Tamil Nadu.
