Fix SAP for sugar cane at Rs.1,550 per tonne: CPI (M)

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The CPI(M) State Committee has urged the State government to fix state advisory price (SAP) of sugar cane at Rs.1,550 per tonne with 9 per cent recovery rate.

A resolution adopted at the State committee meeting accused the Centre of not abiding by the report of the committee appointed by it to fix prices for agriculture produce.

The party said that while the committee had recommended Rs.1,550 per tonne of sugar cane this year, the Centre had fixed Rs.811.80 as the statutory minimum price (SMP). Subsequently the Tamil Nadu government announced Rs.1050 as SAP.

Disappointed

Stating that farmers were disappointed by this announcement, the party said that though sugar factories were making huge profits through sale of by-products such as molasses, ethanol and electricity, farmers were not benefited. “If a fair price is not given, farmers will give up cultivating sugar cane,” the party warned.

Another resolution urged the Union government to reduce the price of petrol and diesel in the wake of the decrease in oil price in the international market.
