Need for sustainable land management stressed

Lands that ensure food security facing threat of degradation: ICRISAT chief

‘Health of land is basis of food chain, climate and livelihood’

‘World witnessing food, energy, climate, credit crisis’

HYDERABAD: Failure to address desertification, land degradation and drought threats to sustainable land management would have severe impact on food and water security, cautioned William Dar, Director General, International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

Dr. Dar, who is also the chair to the committee on science and technology of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), said the lands that support farmers and ensure food security were facing ever-increasing threats of degradation. He said that it could not be business as usual when it comes to dealing with land degradation, according to an ICRISAT release here on Monday.

“The health of the lands is the basis of our food chain, climate and the livelihoods of our poorest people”. He said the positive impacts on combating land degradation could come only with the application of good science. World was witnessing food, energy, climate and credit crisis, each having repercussions on every sphere of human activity. “Land degradation will add to the adverse impact of each of these problems” he added.

Quoting 2008 Global Hunger Index, he said 33 countries were showing alarming levels of hunger. “Though the right to food is a basic human right, there are close to a billion people who suffer from chronic hunger. The FAO’s 2006 State of Food of Insecurity Report cites agricultural growth as being critical for reducing hunger”, Dr. Dar pointed out.
