600 banana trees damaged in Watrap

Staff Reporter

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Amidst stray incidents of stone pelting that continued for the second day, the police beefed up security arrangements in the district on Tuesday.

Tension prevailed in Watrap region where over 600 banana trees and scores of coconut and teak saplings were damaged on Monday night. Revenue and police officials inspected Arjunapuram and pacified the farmers with promise of proper relief.

Police sources said that patrolling had been intensified and police pickets formed to prevent miscreants from indulging in mischievous activities. Following damage to six vehicles on Monday, at least five vehicles, including buses and mini-buses, were targeted by anti-social elements on Tuesday.

No one was injured in the incidents.
