Yeddyurappa to inaugurate it on November 14

Valedictory function will be held in Shimoga on November 20

Five persons will be honoured with ‘Sahakara Rathna’ title

SHIMOGA: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will inaugurate the valedictory function of 55th All India Cooperative Week here on November 20.

Giving details about the weeklong programme here on Tuesday, president of the Karnataka State Cooperative Federation G.T. Deve Gowda said that nearly 50,000 members of cooperative societies all over the State would participate in the function.

He said that Cooperative Week would be inaugurated by Mr. Yeddyurappa at Koodala Sangama in Bagalkot district on November 14. A training programme in cooperative education and training would be launched.

He said that it would be followed by functions daily in Chamarajanagar, Hospet, Davangere, Bangalore, and Mangalore till the valedictory function at the Nehru Stadium here on November 20.

He said that the valedictory function would be held under the joint auspices of the Karnataka State Apex Bank, Shimoga District Cooperative Central Bank, Shimoga Milk Union Ltd. (SHIMUL), Malnad Areca Marketing Cooperative Society (MAMCOS), District Cooperative Union and all urban cooperative societies and local cooperative societies in the district.

Mr. Gowda said that five persons would be honoured with the “Sahakara Rathna” title on the occasion, which carried a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and a medal.

Several resolutions would be adopted at the valedictory function, which included establishment of “Cooperative Study Chair” at Kuvempu University, awarding special marks to graduates, postgraduates and diploma holders in cooperation as “weightage” while seeking employment in the cooperative sector, adopting a village in Shimoga district by Shimoga District Cooperative Central Bank and SHIMUL to ensure its development, he said.

He said that a reception committee headed by him had been set up. President of Shimoga District Cooperative Central Bank R.M. Manjunath Gowda and co-operator B.Y. Raghavendra were part of the committee.

He said the cooperative sector in the State could sustain itself by facing challenges in the wake of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, through its competitive spirit.

Mr. Gowda described the extension of agricultural loan scheme introduced by the Yeddyurappa Government through cooperative institutions at three per cent interest as unprecedented. This facility was made available to those who repaid their loan within one year, he said.

He said the Government’s decision to waive farm loans amounting to Rs. 1,830 crore had benefitted nearly 12 lakh farmers.

He said the BJP Government, which faced problems in the wake of scarcity of fertilizers immediately after it came to power, had decided to have adequate stocks in advance by making a direct purchase from fertilizer companies. The Government had earmarked Rs. 500 crore for the purpose.
