dated November 5, 1958: Supreme Pontiff

Pope John XXIII, the peasant’s son, was crowned with the triple papal tiara on November 4 as “the Father of princes and kings, Ruler of all the world and Vicar of Christ on earth.” An estimated 10 million people watched on television throughout Europe as a cardinal solemnly placed on the Pope’s head the glittering beehive shaped crown. The four-hour ceremony came to a climax as the Pope walked in procession out into the central balcony of the Basilica. The Pope, seated on a gold and crimson throne, at once sought divine help. “May the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in whose power and authority we trust, intercede for us with God”, he prayed.
