To meet demand: Tirupur Export Knit Printers Association plans to establish a printing technology institute in the city. —

Tirupur: Shortage of employable talent is worrying entrepreneurs in the knitwear printing segment of the textile supply chain in Tirupur even as the changing global consumer demands and technology development pose newer challenges to them.

To wriggle out of the situation, Tirupur Export Knit Printers Association (TEKPA) plans to establish a printing technology institute here at an outlay of Rs. 2 crore with technical support from the Textiles Committee functioning under the Union Ministry of Textiles.

The two-storeyed institution will offer diploma course in printing technology to churn out more skilled workers and to enhance dexterity of the labour already engaged in the sector.

“We are seeking grants from the Central Government to meet 75 per cent of the capital cost, while the knit printers based here will make contributions to meet the remaining amount,” TEKPA president T.R. Srikanth told The Hindu.

The academy is expected to be commissioned during 2009-10. With the demand for typeface garments on an increase, the printing segment is now playing a pivotal role in the textiles production chain. “About 80 per cent of the orders placed with the manufacturers in this textile cluster now are for printed attires and the size of the (printing) sector in Tirupur presently stands at Rs. 500 crore,” Mr. Srikanth said.
