RTC union serves strike notice

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Members of the National Mazdoor Union (NMU) in the APSRTC on Monday served strike notice, initially for two days on or after November 17, protesting against the government’s move to introduce 1,500 SETWIN buses across the State.

A delegation led by NMU working president M. Nageswara Rao served notices on the corporation’s in-charge Managing Director B.L. Meena, stating that they would strike work if government did not retract its move. The union leaders also called on Principal Secretary, Transport, A.K. Parida.

Mr. Rao regretted that even after assuring the recognised union that not even a single permit would be issued for new SETWIN buses, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had recently given the go-ahead for the proposal to have 1,500 new buses, including 500 for operation in the twin cities. Currently, 100 SETWIN buses ply in the State capital.

The NMU leader observed that the government appeared more interested in helping individuals rather than facilitating the public sector corporation.

He recalled that Rs. 140 crore worth of concessions extended to different sections of society was pending reimbursement for the past three years.

He also recalled that the government had failed to accept the recommendation of experts from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and provide capital of Rs. 750 crore, to the APSRTC.

This amount would help APSRTC buy the much-needed buses.
