Order denying permission for MDMK meeting set aside

Special Correspondent

Court issues directive to

Chennai Police Commissioner

CHENNAI: Setting aside a city police order denying permission to the MDMK for holding a public meeting to criticise the arrest of party general secretary Vaiko, Justice K. Suguna of the Madras High Court on Monday said that the party was at liberty to make a representation to the Chennai Police Commissioner in a week.

The court directed the Commissioner to pass order in two days on receipt of the representation.

In a writ petition filed by counsel, G. Devadoss and G. Nanmaran, the MDMK, represented by its north Chennai district secretary S.Jeevan, said Mr. Vaiko and presidium chairman M. Kannappan were arrested for their speech at a meeting here on ‘What is happening in Eelam.’

The petitioner said the party condemned “arbitrary detention” of the two and decided to hold a public meeting. He applied for permission to conduct a public meeting near Mint on October 30. Without providing an opportunity, the Assistant Commissioner of Police refused permission by his proceedings dated October 29. He reliably understood that the ACP had passed the impugned order only on the directions of the authorities.

The petitioner sought a direction to the authorities to grant permission for a public meeting or a demonstration by fasting on November 4.
