dated November 3, 1958: Portents in Pak

Prime Minister Nehru, addressing a public meeting in Baroda on November 2, declared that the recent events in Pakistan where a military dictator had become the ‘Malik’ (master) of that country were portents which one could not appreciate or like. He said that India, however, had to learn from such developments and see that it did not get entangled in such things. Mr. Nehru said: “It is impossible for any happening like the happenings in Pakistan to take place in Baroda. We are very strong and firm. While this (military dictatorship) could not happen, there were a hundred and one things which could create obstacles in our work. These are our old weaknesses of disunity, casteism, petty provincial quarrels, which get erupted now and then. We have to beware of them.”
