VIJAYAWADA: City-based Lanco Foundation on Sunday distributed scholarships to 35 meritorious students from different colleges in the city. In all, Rs. 4 lakhs was distributed to them, based on the course they were studying and their academic record.

Presenting the cheques to the students, local MP L. Rajagopal advised students to draw inspiration from successful people and collect proper information pertaining to their career.

“Innovative thinking makes you different from the crowd and helps you succeed in your career. Don’t think about anything else except your academics and always try to improve your ranks,” he added.

He said that the objective of the scholarships was to encourage talent and provide an opportunity to those who were excelling in academics to pursue higher education.

Lauding the efforts of the Lanco Foundation, Mayor Mallika Begum called upon students to make better use of the opportunity and not to forget helping others after settling in their careers.

Selection process

General Manager of the Lanco Kondapalli Power Project A.S. Rao said that selection of students for the scholarships was purely based on their merit.

“We have appointed a committee to select students. The committee visited all the colleges in the city, interacted with principals and interviewed students before finalising the list,” he said.

Students who were pursuing graduation course in arts, science and engineering streams received scholarships ranging from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 25,000. “This is as part of fulfilling our corporate social responsibility. Last year, we have distributed Rs. 2 lakhs and this year we doubled it.

“The amount will certainly be increased in the next year,” Mr. Rao said.
