White frog spotted in village near Chengalpattu

P. Oppili

CHENNAI: A pure white frog was sighted in a house at Pulikudivakkam, near Chengalpattu, a fortnight ago.

Herpetologist Romulus Whitaker spotted the frog in his garden.

The frog’s dark eyes showed that it was not an albino (whose eyes will be pink) but a ‘leucistic morph’ (white phase) of the common frog called Ramanella, Mr. Whitaker said.

This little frog would enter houses during the summer, attracted to taps and toilets, and make them its home for months, Mr. Whitaker said.

The species, White Ramanella, was earlier spotted by herpetologists in Mangalore, but it was for the first time that it was seen in Tamil Nadu, Mr Whitaker said.

Janaki Lenin, a naturalist, said that after handling the amphibian, she and Mr. Whitaker washed their hands, as they were not sure whether the frog was poisonous or not. Secretion from its body would be allergic to some.
