Gandarvan Award to encourage budding writers

PUDUKOTTAI: Honouring short-story writers with cash awards formed the highlight of the two-day district conference of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ Association held here recently.

The award, named after the writer Gandarvan, aimed at encouraging the talents of up and coming writers. The first prize of Rs.5,000 went to M.T. Muthukumar of Chennai; the second prize with Rs.3,000, was bagged by Subbarao of Madurai; while the third prize which carried a purse of Rs.2,000 went to S. Madhiazhagan of Pudukottai.

Giving away the prizes, noted writer Prabanjan paid tributes to Gandarvan who was not only a great writer but a trade unionist. Mr. Prabanjan also honoured Gandarvan’s wife, Chandra on the occasion.

The inaugural session was marked by a felicitation to the artistes of the ‘Pudugai Boopalam Kalai Kuzhu.’ Noted film director Pralayan, in his address, appreciated the efforts of the artistes in the cause of promotion of fine arts.

The conference also addressed social issues by adopting resolutions. One of the resolutions urged the Central government to restore the Parliamentary status to Pudukottai district. Another resolution pleaded for renovation of the Town Hall in the town. It also wanted the Municipality to extend certain concession in the rental tariff for literary programmes.

The state general secretary of the Association, S. Tamizhselvan; the district president Rama. Ramanathan and the Advisor to Sahithya Akademy Thangam Moorthy were among those who spoke.
