Livelihood for tsunami victims

Special Correspondent

KARAIKAL: Along with rehabilitating tsunami victims, the houses built in Karaikalmedu village have also helped in the creation of livelihood for local artisans, officials at the handing-over ceremony said here on Saturday.

The 430 houses in the village, along with 500 others in two nearby villages, were built using fly-ash blocks, which were manufactured from new units created in the district for the purpose, Mr. Patara of Development Alternatives, a Delhi-based NGO, said. The blocks were stronger than normal bricks and also resulted in the use of 80,000 tonnes of waste from the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

Four units were set up in the district in consultation with Poovam Building Centre and these would provide new employment to the people, along with a capacity for infrastructure and housing development, he said.
