Chennai: Naren Kumar of Team Sidvin ended day one of the World Rally Championships’ Rally of Japan at Sapporo in eighth place with a total time of 46:35.4s. Evgeny Novikov holds the lead with a total time of 45:49.6. After a bright start, where Naren finished Stage 1 in third place and was in fifth after the second, he slipped to ninth with a fourth stage time of 03:45.2s but pulled things back towards the end to finish eighth. Naren later said, “The cold tyres on the concrete surface skidded and I hit a concrete block in the SS10 and lost some time. “I will compensate for this tomorrow by upping the speed. The car is working very well as we had predicted and the engine and the suspension are very well suited to my style of driving and I will try and extract every bit I can from the car tomorrow. “This is the first day and we have two more long days to go and I am keeping my fingers crossed and will do my best,” he added.
